Pediatric Dentistry

Your family's dental health is our priority, and generations of families have received their dental care at Start Smiling Dental.  Each member of our team is focused on making your child's appointments fun and stress-free. Parents are encouraged to take an active role in their children's care and are always allowed to accompany them during their treatment.

At Start Smiling Dental in Sandy, Springs GA, we recommend scheduling your child’s first visit at around 12 months. At that time we will check for proper tooth development, check for tooth decay, and go over some tips for your child's home care. This first visit is complimentary! Feel free to call and schedule an appointment or just bring them in with you to your appointment.

We generally recommend the first cleaning and exam around 2-3 years old.  Our goal at this time is to establish a happy relationship with your child and set the stage for them to look forward to coming to the dentist for the rest of their life. If at any time your child appears frightened or uncomfortable - we stop the appointment and wait until they're ready. Sometimes they're ready in a few minutes - sometimes it takes another year! The main goal is for it to be a trauma free appointment. To help make their appointments fun, your child can chose their favorite show on Netflix, wear some silly sunglasses, and a trip to the treasure chest is always a must!

The Early Years

A child’s primary teeth, sometimes referred to as baby teeth, will usually begin to appear between 6 – 9 months of age. At this time, it becomes important for parents to begin an oral healthcare routine with their baby to establish the importance of dental hygiene as well as to create the twice-daily habit of brushing. For approximately the first several years of a child’s life he or she will rely on their primary teeth to eat, speak, and chew so it is imperative that these teeth remain healthy and intact until they fall out naturally.  We look forward to helping monitor your children’s oral healthcare during this impressionable time.

Proactive Prevention

We feel that prevention is key in maintaining your children’s healthy, natural primary teeth. So we offer protective, preventative options for pediatric patients. Fluoride is absorbed into the enamel of children’s teeth, making them more resistant to decay. Although there is a small amount of topical fluoride in toothpastes and in some drinking water supplies, a higher concentration can be applied professionally to your child's teeth for extra protection and prevention. In addition, a sealant can be applied to the pits and fissures of your children’s rear primary teeth to prevent the growth of decay-causing bacteria. These sealants are a highly effective prevention technique.

Accident & Advanced Treatments

While it is our goal for your children to retain their natural, healthy primary teeth until they are replaced by permanent teeth, we also understand that goal is not always feasible. Start Smiling Dental provides quality treatment to pediatric patients suffering from broken, damaged, and decaying teeth as well. A child who is too young to lose a tooth, but is suffering from the pain of decay may benefit from a root canal, thus saving them from the premature loss that could in turn result in the need for orthodontic treatment.  Chips and minor breaks that often occur in childhood can be repaired with the help of dental bonding, which uses resin and compounds to reshape and repair a broken tooth.
